Be sure to catch the latest at the Arkansas Art Center, including: “Nathalia Edenmont: Force of Nature,” from Feb. 6 – April 1. The exhibit is the artist’s first major American museum solo exhibition and features ten, richly colored, large-format photographs. Five of the photographs, including Eden, a self-portrait of the artist, are recent works and have never before been exhibited. Force of Nature is organized by the Arkansas Arts Center and Nancy Hoffman Gallery, New York, New York, and is presented in conjunction with the Garden Club of America Zone 9 annual meeting, which occurs in Little Rock, Arkansas, in late-April 2016.
Don’t miss the opening of “Dorothea Lange’s America” this weekend, March 5, also at the Arkansas Art Center. The exhibit brings together many of the photographer’s images made as she traveled across America during the 1930s documenting the suffering of unemployed or terribly underpaid agricultural workers and their families. Lange took these photographs as part of the photography program connected to the Farm Security Administration, a federal agency formed under the New Deal to assist poor farmers with loans and other programs.
The 75th Anniversary Exhibit opens at historic Arkansas Museum on March 11th from 5-8. The reception for the exhibit will feature a vintage cocktail from 1941, the year the museum was founded, live music by the Delta Brass Combo and a unique 75th anniversary Living History performance featuring portrayals of museum founder Louise Loughborough. The anniversary exhibit is a celebration of the museum’s commitment to preserving and exhibiting objects and artworks that illuminate Arkansas’s rich and varied cultural heritage. More Info
Head to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Art Gallery I for “Jobbers, Heels, and Faces: Paintings by Robert McCann,” which is showing until March 3. The exhibit depicts works inspired by pro wrestling. McCann is an associate art professor at Michigan State University.
For local music, start with #SessionsatSOM on Wednesday, March 2, with Melody Pond at South on Main. The show starts at 8:30 with a $5 cover charge. The whole month of March is curated by Daniel Gold, and you can catch up with all of the upcoming acts, here.
Catch Bluesboy Jag & The Juke Joint Zombies, at The White Water on Thursday March 3, at 9 p.m. Think blues standards from the ‘20s on. If you’d rather, line up for Big Piph and Tomorrow Maybe on Friday, March 4 at 9:30 p.m. There’s a $10 cover, but the sick beats you’ll catch are worth it. On Saturday March 5, White Water welcomes Travis Linville and John Calvin Abney – don’t miss these troubadours.
For a bit of theater, head over to the Arkansas Repertory Theatre to catch “An Iliad: Arkansas Stories of War.” The show is a series of talkbacks featuring local service members and their families who will share their personal stories of war. Show times are March 2 and 4.
